Compost Cache Valley

Healthy Soil. Healthy Food. Healthy Families.

Our Process

Collecting

Step 1:  We provide you with a clean bin to collect your food waste. You can find a list of approved waste here.

Step 2:  We collect your filled bin on a regular schedule and replace it with a clean bin!

Processing

Step 3:  All food waste returns to our facility.

Step 4:  Our worms are maintained at specific temperature, moisture and pH ranges to turn your food waste into a viable resource called vermicompost!  Vermicompost, or worm castings, is a naturally derived soil amendment.

Applying

Step 5:  Our vermicompost should be used scarcely – a little bit goes a LONG way! Get your soil tested AND consult your local extension agent for preparing and improving your garden soil.

You can use vermicompost while potting plants, planting gardens, or germinating seeds! Your plants will love their boost of nutrients (in moderation, of course)!

To Compost or Not to Compost?

General:

Compost Cache Valley can accept only “pre-consumer food waste,” a.k.a. foods that have not been cooked.  Additionally, we use worms to compost your food waste, which limits our range of acceptable items. We can accept nearly all vegetables scraps, coffee grounds, egg shells, and even brown cardboard!  Find a more comprehensive list below.

What can I put in my bin?

  • Fruit and Fruit Peels – cherries, apples, pears, peaches, strawberries, etc.
  • Vegetables – beans, leafy greens, onions, tomatoes, carrots, etc.
  • Eggshells – Provides “grit” for the worms, yum!
  • Coffee Grounds and Tea Bags – Gives the vermicompost great structure!
  • Starchy foods – breads, pasta, pancakes, rice, potatoes

Other Acceptable Items (but must be kept separate)

We can accept paper items!  These items must be kept separate from your food waste.  Simply set them out with your provided container in a cardboard box!  Need a box? Contact us!

  • Paper egg cartons
  • Newspaper
  • Brown paper bags
  • Brown cardboard

What NOT to add to your bin:

  • Salty foods
  • Oily foods
  • Meats
  • Dairy Products
  • Pet waste
  • Hair (animal or human, ew)
