Our Story

Compost Cache Valley began operations in February 2019. We are committed to supporting the local food economy in Cache Valley by turning food waste into soil.  We believe in promoting healthy Utah families by providing healthy soil to grow healthy food.

Our Vision

We envision a local food system in Cache Valley where:

  • Residents and restaurants purchase the majority of their food from local growers.
  • Local growers use local resources to produce their product.
  • Local resources are conserved, collected, and recycled back into the local food system.

Our Mission

Our mission is to facilitate the development of a healthy and sustainable food system in Cache Valley by:

  • Empowering local families and businesses to create nutrient-rich soil, support healthy food choices, and build healthier communities.
  • Supporting local growers and restaurants to close the loop on food waste and reduce their carbon footprint.
  • Diverting natural resources from the municipal landfill and recycling them back in the local food system.

Anthony + Rachel

Anthony Whaley and Rachel Bernardo live with their two dogs – Mowgli and Felix – in Logan, Utah.

Originally from Ohio, Anthony is a graduate student in soil science at Utah State University. Both Anthony and Rachel are committed to facilitating a local food economy by providing the resources to develop healthy soil and healthy food.  When they are not working, you can find them hiking throughout Cache County or at the Cache Valley Gardeners’ Market.

Get to know the team!

Anthony Whaley

Anthony is the owner of Compost Cache Valley LLC and operates as the Director of Finance and Operations. He obtained a Bachelor’s in Environmental Geology with minors in SEE (Sustainability, Energy and the Environment) and Chemistry. He has extensive experience and knowledge of working with Geographic Information Systems. Anthony is currently a Graduate Research Assistant at Utah State University pursuing a Master’s in Soil Science. His research focuses on quantifying and mapping ecosystem services provided by agricultural land and evaluating greenhouse gas emissions from various manure management systems in animal agriculture.

Rachel Bernardo

Rachel is the Head of Communications and Engagement for the Compost Cache Valley LLC team. She obtained a Bachelor’s in Communication with an emphasis on Public Relations and a minor in Psychology from the University of Dayton.  Rachel then completed her Master’s in Interdisciplinary Studies focusing on human rights and conflict resolution with research interests in sex and labor trafficking. She also works in the Department of Global Engagement at Utah State University.  

Gabrielle Boltz

Gabrielle (Brie) Boltz serves as our Creative Consultant, fulfilling our graphic design, brand design, and web presence needs. She has been an independent Creative Consultant for three years now, after four years of work strictly in private photography. She holds a Bachelor’s in Sociology, English, and Gender Studies from the University of Dayton, and is the sole owner of Gabrielle Elizabeth Studios, LLC. Gabrielle has provided creative brand and presence services for dozens of small businesses ranging from startups, like Compost Cache Valley, to multi-million dollar a year revenue generating, established businesses.
